Making Packing Effortless: The Pre-Trip Closet Edit

We’re heading to England and Scotland today for spring break, and packing definitely came up a little faster than I expected!

Usually, I’m a pretty efficient packer. I stick to a capsule wardrobe, keep things simple, and don’t tend to overpack.

But even with that, I went into my closet to start pulling outfits and found myself second-guessing more than I expected.

What actually makes sense for this trip?
How many layers do I really need?
What will I realistically wear once I’m there?

Not because I didn’t have anything to wear - but because there were too many that didn’t really apply. It wasn’t a lack of options, it was a lack of clear ones.

That’s when it turns into pulling things off hangers, trying things on, and going back and forth on pieces that might work… debating whether you need that extra sweater, just in case. 😅

So instead of pushing through it, I took a step back and did a quick closet edit.

Nothing big or time-consuming - just a simple reset that makes everything easier to see and a lot easier to decide.

Here’s what that looked like!

Step 1: Start With a Quick Reality Check

Before you even touch your suitcase, take a quick look at what’s currently in your closet.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this still fit?

  • Is this piece in season for where I’m going?

  • Have I worn this recently?

  • Would I actually bring this on the trip?

If the answer is no, leave it on the hanger (or toss it into your donate bin 😉). This allows you to clear out distractions so you can actually see what you want to wear.

Because most people are trying to pack from a closet filled with:

  • Off-season clothing

  • Things that don’t quite fit right

  • “Maybe someday” pieces

  • Endless duplicates

And when your closet is full of distractions, that’s where the overwhelm starts.

Clear even a small portion of that out of the way, and suddenly you can actually see what you’re working with.

Step 2: Pull Out the “Maybe” Pieces

Instead of immediately tossing things into your suitcase, give yourself a little space to think.

This can be:

  • A chair in your room

  • A section of your bed

  • Even the floor!

Start pulling anything you might want to bring and place it there.

This step alone makes such a difference! It allows you to sift through your options before committing, and it’s one of the simplest ways to avoid overpacking.

Because once everything is in one place, you can actually:

  • See what you’re working with

  • Notice duplicates

  • Start building outfits more easily

It takes packing from a guessing game, to something much more intentional.

Step 3: Build Outfits Instead of Packing Individual Items

One of the biggest packing mistakes people make is packing random pieces instead of full outfits.

Instead, try:

  • Pairing tops with bottoms

  • Adding a layer if needed

  • Including the shoes or accessories you’d actually wear with it

When you skip this step, you end up with a suitcase full of “options”… and nothing that really works together.

When you do build outfits, you quickly notice:

  • If something only works with one outfit

  • Which pieces can mix and match

  • What you actually need (and what you don’t)

And almost every time, people realize they need far less than they thought.

Step 4: Let Your Trip Help You Edit Your Closet

Here’s something I always notice when packing…

There are pieces you reach for without even thinking, and then there are the ones you keep picking up, putting down, and questioning.

That hesitation? It usually means something.

Because when you’re going on a trip, you naturally gravitate toward what feels:

  • Easy

  • Comfortable

  • Like you

So instead of convincing yourself to bring something, just notice what feels natural.

Those are your go-to pieces - the ones your suitcase (and your closet!) should be built around.

Step 5: Return Home With a Fresh Perspective

One of the most helpful (and often overlooked) parts of travel happens when you get home.

Before everything goes back into your closet, pause for a second.

Take a quick mental note:

  • Which pieces did you wear on repeat?

  • What never left your suitcase?

  • What did you wish you had brought?

Not only can this insight can make future packing even easier, but it’s one of the simplest ways to refine your closet without doing a full overhaul!

Why This Works

When your closet feels unclear, that’s when packing feels the most difficult.

But when you take just a little time to edit first, everything shifts.

You’re not digging, you’re not guessing, you’re not packing “just in case.”

You’re choosing from pieces you actually wear, love, and feel good in!

And that’s what makes packing feel effortless.

If you’ve been dreading packing for your next trip, start here! And if your closet feels like it’s working against you even on a normal day - that’s usually a sign it might be time for a deeper edit.
