Moving 101: Tips for a Stress-Free Transition

If you’ve ever moved, you know how stressful it can be. The exhaustion. The chaos. The “Why do we own so much stuff?!” panic. And while a new home brings so much possibility, it also brings a lot of pressure — to get it all right, right away.

After walking alongside countless families through their moves, I’ve learned that moving isn’t just a logistical event; it’s an emotional transition. You’re not just packing boxes — you’re packing memories, hopes, dreams, and yes, sometimes heartbreak.

So today, I want to share the real tips — not just the Pinterest-perfect lists — that help make a move feel smoother, lighter, and dare I say, joyful!

Before You Pack, Dream a Little

I always ask my clients this simple question:

“What do you want your new home to feel like?”

Not look like — feel like.

Maybe you want it to feel light and fresh, like a reset. Or warm and cozy, filled with intention. Whatever it is, let that feeling guide your decisions. You don’t have to bring every “just in case” item or box of old decor. You’re not just moving things — you’re moving your life. Pack the pieces that support your vision for the future you want to create.

Make a “First 48” Survival Kit

Picture this: It’s your first night in the new house, you’re surrounded by boxes, and you can’t find your toothbrush or your phone charger. Sound familiar?

Save yourself the stress by creating a First 48 Hours Kit:

  • Toiletries

  • Pajamas

  • Favorite coffee or tea setup

  • Chargers

  • Pet food

  • Toilet paper

It’s like packing for a mini vacation… except the destination is your new home!

Edit

One thing I’ve noticed lately? More families are craving simplicity. Moves are the perfect chance to right-size — not just in square footage, but in lifestyle.

As you sort through your belongings, ask yourself:

  • Does this fit who I am today?

  • Would I buy this again?

  • Am I carrying this out of guilt or love?

It’s okay to let go. Donate, sell, or pass things along. Release what no longer serves you, and make space for what’s ahead. When going through your belongings, keep in mind what your new space looks like and what your organization goals are!

Map It Out Before Moving Day

One of the biggest stressors I see on move-in day? Nobody knows where anything goes.

Before the trucks pull up, take time to map out your space. Measure the big pieces, decide where furniture will land, and think through how you want your new home to flow. This will prevent so much unnecessary stress on moving day and will help you settle in faster!

Pack a Little Joy

I call this the Joy Box — a small bin filled with items that make you feel at home right away:

  • A framed photo

  • A candle you love

  • A cozy blanket

  • A favorite coffee mug

Unpacking this box first gives you a moment to ground yourself amid the chaos and give you a little spark of joy.

Pause, Breathe, and Celebrate

This might be the most important advice I can give you: Build in moments to slow down.

Take breaks. Order takeout. Walk through your new neighborhood. Sit on the floor and dream about what’s next.

Because here’s the truth: Moving isn’t just about leaving one place — it’s about stepping into the next chapter of your life. ❤️
